Despite being one of Colombia’s most extensively studied natural systems and one of those that have received the greatest financial and technical resources, the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) continues to show signs of environmental crisis and deterioration in the living conditions of its local inhabitants.
Many plans and programmes have remained on paper or failed to produce the expected effects, while opportunities to request international assistance through its inclusion in the Ramsar Convention and the Biosphere Reserve are not being used. This is attributed mainly to a lack of coordinated and timely action by the territorial authorities governing the CGSM. Although there are several reasons for this, one important reason is:
The lack of a CGSM information system that is public, up to date and shared by all the organisations working in the ecoregion.
The proposal is to establish and maintain this Information System (SI-CGSM), which:
- presents the many scattered sources of knowledge and information comprehensively and systematically in a single internet portal;
- describes the ecoregion and its “land”, “nature” and “human” systems, including human-induced changes in the “land” and “nature” systems and the consequences for the socioeconomic system;
- identifies the limits of our understanding arising from gaps in relevant knowledge about subsystems, locations and/or periods;
- makes information available to managers at local, regional and national levels in an analysed and appropriate form;
thereby providing a sound, shared basis for the ecoregion’s sustainable socioeconomic development and facilitating timely, coordinated action by the governing authorities.
SI-CGSM will thus provide a sound, shared and transparent foundation for the sustainable socioeconomic development of the CGSM ecoregion and serve as a prototype for similar projects, contributing to balanced socioecological development in Colombia.
