This paper describes some approaches for the water balance modeling of fluvial and coastal wetland systems, where one or more water bodies are interconnected, interacting with a river and/or the sea. The modeling methodology is based on the continuity equation and the hydraulic behavior of the connection channels. In this paper, the models for four wetland systems located in the Lower Magdalena River floodplain are presented. Typical results are included to illustrate the type of information these models can give to contribute to the knowledge of the dynamics of these fragile ecosystems, their recuperation, preservation, exploitation and sustainable management.
