Range Description: This species occurs from the Pacific lowlands of Panama (Jaramillo et al. 2010) southward into western Colombia, northwestern Ecuador (west of the Andes); the lower slopes and inner valleys of the Colombian Andes, including the western versant of the Cordillera Oriental; the Caribbean lowlands of Colombia east to Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region, and eastward through the Departamento del Cesar and the Departamento de Norte de Santander into the Lake Maracaibo Basin in Venezuela, and the northwestern coastal lowlands as far east as Caracas and the state of Miranda (Campbell and Lamar 1989, Rodríguez-Guerra 2010). In Panama it has an elevation range from sea level to 600 metres, however, Micrurus dumerilii antioquiensis is found as high as 1,800 metres, M. d. carinicauda is found up to 1,700 metres in Cerro La Hechicera, Venezuela, and M. d. colombianus extends to at least 2,133 metres in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of Colombia (Campbell and Lamar 1989, Barrio 2001, Jaramillo et al. 2010).
