The distribution of Thamnodynastes gambotensis as understood at present is restricted to the lower Río Magdalena Basin and the adjacent Caribbean lowlands of Colombia. However, the existence of an undescribed form with characteristics similar to this species east of the Andes in the same country, and which may be conspecific, raises the possibility that it has a broader distribution (Bailey and Thomas 2007).
